USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

Hello everybody!
I am about to become a nationally registered paramedic here in America and am very interested in working in South Africa someday. I was wondering if anybody knows if reciprocity is possible and how one would go about it. Also, does anybody know whether the US paramedic would translate more appropriately to ILS or ALS in South Africa?
Thanks for any insight or suggestions! I look forward to hearing from you....
Dominic

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

Hi Dominic
The good news is that it is possible to work in SA with American qualifications. The bad news is that the HPCSA won't tell us who can do what. They seem to decide on a case to case basis. You can contact them via their website to find out whether they will allow you to register as an ILS or ALS and whether you need to challenge some of our exams at some point and if so, whose.

Be warned: this takes time!
Good luck and we hope to see you some time!

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

Thanks MDL for the very informative reply. It's alright that it will take a while, as I would really like to get some experience and confidence under my belt before heading off to a different system. I'll be in touch with them and let you know what happens.
Thanks again!

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

My pleasure.
Please do stay in touch. Apart from the fact that we would very much like to know what the HPCSA tells you, it is also great to get perspectives from colleagues in other areas and compare protocols etc.
Good luck!

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

Hi Dominic, you can view our various protocols under the Downloads section.

One difference to note, is that our Paramedic and ILS qualification is an independent one and not required to work under consent of a Doctor. This might be a point to ponder and a difference in systems when coming across and may influence how you work here vs there. I know of previous persons that wished to practice here and as Sico said: is a case-by-case scenario. This person was required to challenge the exams and jump through a few loops.

Please keep in contact and let us know.

My attachments section is not functional yet, so I have also added another document I found from HPCSA outlining the requirements to work in SA for foreigners, under the downloads, general section....Hope it helps...click here --> Foreign Registration

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

Have you folks ever considered an exchange program, not neccessaryily to work but to ride and experience another system?

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

An exchange program was brought up in a former discussion and it sounded like a lot of people would be interested.  The biggest concern was that you would be swopping a fully functioning paramedic for a ride-along medic...  on this side we are so short of paramedics that it might present a little bit of a problem to the big bosses.  Did anyone actually go and find out from their management whether it could be made to work?  If so, can I pretend to be a paramedic and go along!?  wink

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

As I work for a teaching hospital (we do 911 for the city of Atlanta, I know and have played host to a wide variety of national and international visitors.  As a physician, it would be possible to not only ride with us but perhaps to observe in our ER (level 1 trauma center) and perhaps to shadow our trauma surgeons.  Part of the beauty of being part of a teaching hospital.  How difficult would it be to set something up there?  What would be the issues an American paramedic would need to deal with to do this?

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

I also work in a hospital that does a lot of training in trauma both for surgical registrars and paramedics.  If a swop from one hospital to another is on the cards I really don't think it's going to be difficult.  To ride along with the pre-hospital crews would in theory have to be arranged with an entirely different department, but we do them so many favours and know so many of the crews, that we might be able to call in a few favours to smooth the way...  smile

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

To conclude this thread, please check out the Downloads section, I found a document from our beloved HPCSA, outlining the requirements for foreign qualified medics to convert to our system in SA.

Hope this help.  wink

Thanks, Jmedic. That's very helpful. I just (finally) got my state license and shall be looking into this further.

Re: USA paramedic reciprocity in South Africa

I would be keen to see what happens here as I am currently studying my degree via Victoria University in Melbourne Australia and I am curious as to what foreign qualifications are accepted in SA.

Good luck with the coming to SA - would be nice to have some foreigners here except for the world cup!
